On Dec. 10, 2019, Cindy Miller received the 2018 Elkhart County CASA Volunteer of the Year award at the CASA Volunteer in-service for her outstanding service to the program.
Miller began working as a CASA April 17, 2015. Throughout those years she has proven herself invaluable by helping the program in various capacities. Miller is dedicated and diligent in bringing the best possible outcome for the kids she serves.
“As a CASA I am the one person that is with the child and speaks for the child through the legal process,” said Miller. “Our presence makes an incredible difference. I can help advocate for the best outcome for the child – this may be foster care or obtaining services they need to be successful in their home.”
Miller communicates well with her supervisor regarding her clients and asks questions when she feels something “just isn’t right.” She has organized speaking engagements for the CASA director and even jumped in to help work a CASA information booth at a dinner in Middlebury when the need arose.
In addition to the heavy lifting part of her responsibilities, Miller is known for expressing her compassion for foster children in subtle ways. For instance, she put her creative skills to work and made blankets to add to the collection CASA gives to foster kids. She also brought a little cheer to one of the program’s families by adopting them for the holiday.
“Being a CASA volunteer allows me to invest in children’s lives with passion while helping and a feeling of success when a positive difference is made in a child’s life,” said Miller.
“She does it all,” said Allen. “It is all of these attributes that make this volunteer a successful advocate and such a strong team member. We are lucky to have her on our team.”
