Compassion. Collaboration. Inclusiveness. Integrity. Excellence. These five values are now written into the heart of the mission of CAPS — Child And Parent Services.

During the September in-service, the administrative team rolled out these core values, engaging employees to help celebrate the unveiling. Each leader wore a bright T-shirt depicting a value and hosted a station consisting of an activity and a discussion on how CAPS exemplifies that value and how staff can utilize and recognize it in their work.

“The unveiling activities were terrific,” said CFAC Family Advocate Vicki Kalil. She also noted that she enjoyed interacting with other staff that she didn’t know well to “discus situations that required that value.”

The staff embraced the newly adopted value set which seems to fit well within their personal work ethics.  “(I am) so proud to be a part of an organization that embraces my values,” said Parent Aide Supervisor Lisa Zakowsky.

These specific values were chosen based on a year’s worth of work that included SWOT analyses, employee feedback and detailed observation.

“Organizational values are important because they help employees work toward a purpose and they help the agency set standards,” said President and CEO Melinda Konrath-Fielding. “Engaged employees, more often than not, have values that are aligned to their organization’s values.”

“I believe CAPS has always had these values,” said Kalil. “But I like that the (administrative team) has identified them.”

To continue the celebration of the unveiling, employees are encouraged to begin nominating others at work who exemplify any of the values. At each in-service, a name will be drawn, and both the nominator and the person nominated will receive a prize. There are other activities in the work as well to help keep the values at the forefront of the mission.

“These values are what support our vision, shape our culture and reflect what is important to the agency,” said Konrath-Fielding. “They determine the way we treat people and shape our basic work ethics.” The values give employees a purpose to work towards and help them achieve goals in the same way that the organizational values give CAPS a purpose to work towards and help the agency achieve its goals.
