Today marks the passing of founding CEO, Daryl Abbott – A visionary leader dedicated to protecting children, Daryl was known as a compassionate leader, and a friend to so many in Elkhart County. His unwavering commitment to protecting kids and supporting families has forever changed our community.
An Early Advocate for Children
Daryl was a pioneer in the field of child abuse prevention. In1973, Daryl gathered a group to share in his vision for bringing child abuse out of the shadows and ensuring every child in Elkhart County felt safe and loved. These early meetings and movement became the start of one of the first nonprofits in Indiana dedicated to preventing and responding to child abuse, CAPS.
Daryl believed every child deserved a chance at a happy, healthy life. Daryl was not just a man of words but also a man of action. Daryl wanted to make a difference, so he rolled up his sleeves and got to work. His passion was infectious, and it inspired others to join in.
His Impact and Legacy
Thanks to Daryl’s early work and dedicated advocacy, CAPS was able to form and secure funding support from United Way. This support enabled CAPS to grow from a single program into a comprehensive child abuse prevention and response organization offering multiple programs and services for children and families. Under Daryl’s leadership, CAPS started Indiana’s first Court Appointed Special Advocates program – (CASA), along with implementing Indiana’s first Child Advocacy Center, along with numerous other programs dedicated to preventing and responding to child abuse. He transformed CAPS into a beacon of hope for numerous families.
Even after retiring 2010, Daryl’s heart for service never wavered. He continued to support the community and served as a director at local nonprofit, Loveway.

Daryl is remembered for his warm smile, his genuine kindness, and his ability to make everyone feel valued. Daryl was a mentor, a confidant, and a friend. His life’s work wasn’t just about protecting children, it was about building a community where children are safe and families thrive. Daryl’s impact is felt every day. It’s in the laughter of the children we’ve helped, the gratitude of the families we’ve supported, and the strength of the community he’s nurtured. His legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering hope for a brighter future.
